Sober Driver Program

Sober Driver Program [SDP] is a Court ordered behaviour change program for repeat drink driving offenders. The program is funded by the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority and delivered in the community via the Probation and Parole Service (Corrective Services NSW).

Freebott is contracted to provide the following SDP services:

· Facilitator Induction Training

A 3 day intensive training program delivered to Probation and Parole officers (and some external applicants). This training prepares participants for the roles of both facilitator and co facilitator.

· Refresher Training

A 2 day training program to ensure 'current competence' of facilitators. To be eligible, participants must have previously completed Facilitator Induction training, have delivered at least one program but have not facilitated a program in the last 12 months.

· Coaching and Support Services

This involves both a formal appraisal and reporting mechanism (Based on AQTF Guidelines) as well as an informal coaching and support structure to assist facilitators with the program content and delivery.

· Program Review

Recently Freebott has conducted an extensive curriculum and program review. Corrective Services NSW have been provided with report findings and recommendations.

· Program Adaptation & Delivery for Correctional Setting

SDP OVERVIEW

Background

The NSW Sober Driver Program (SDP) was developed as a whole of government road safety initiative to target repeat drink drivers sentenced to community-based orders with Corrective Services NSW management. The program was devised and developed by an inter-agency working party, set up under the auspices of the Government Agencies Road Safety Council (GARS).

Aims

The aims of the SDP are to:

· Provide accurate information about alcohol.

· Explain short and long-term effects of alcohol on the body and behaviour.

· Explain ways in which alcohol affects one's ability to drive or ride safely.

· Develop an understanding of the effects and costs of drink driving on self and the community.

· Assist participants to develop essential skills and positive attitudes to ensure safe driving and/or riding occurs.

· Assist drink drivers and riders to identify and implement strategies to avoid drinking and driving and to access additional support when necessary to avoid relapse behaviours
